Multiple murders become clearly defined chess pieces in her layered game of deceit and help lead Deacon, his friends, and the authorities down a carefully chosen path. She sees Deacon as weak and malleable, the perfect candidate to play the part of pawn in his own destiny.
Deacon is haunted by his past and overwhelmed by the present. Blackouts, murders, and events that he cannot remember or explain, take control of his life. Despair crowds his judgment and thoughts of suicide echo within his reality. Debilitated by all that has happened, Deacon is weakened. However, the one thing that keeps him going, the one thing from which he is able to draw true strength is the love that he has for Star. She saw him as weak, but she was wrong. What he believes to be her love gives him an amazing strength of will and purpose. In the shocking conclusion of this intriguing novel, the reader will see Star and Deacon in a completely new light and be left breathless by the heart stopping twist of an ending.
